My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019. Thanks to genetic testing, the high risk clinic, and incredible medical teams at UAB, her cancer was caught super early. After surgery, she had to take one drug - no chemo, no radiation! After her diagnosis, Baret and I underwent genetic testing for the same mutation my mom had (CHEK2+) with a 50/50 chance of having it or not. This mutation greatly increases risk for breast, colon, and other cancers. I was positive. Now, I am currently followed by the same team and clinic that saved my mom’s life! Because I’m positive for the mutation, my kids each (boy OR girl) have a 50% chance of having the same abnormality.
THAT is why I’m involved with BCRFA. I have experienced the benefits through my mom’s story, now am receiving the benefits as a preventative patient, and could see the benefits in my kid’s lives! This foundation pours money into local research in the state of Alabama that is truly impacting and saving lives - like mine!
I would love for you to join us for the Bolt for Breast Cancer run in October! It’s such a fun time with family activities and vendors, but it’s also pretty moving every year to be surrounded by families who have also been impacted by breast cancer in some way (because honestly, who hasn’t?). You can also donate through the link if you’re unable to join us but would like to give to the foundation.
I’m running for Carol.
Just a small donation will go a long way to helping me meet my fundraising goal for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama and Bolt for Breast Cancer!
About the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama
Founded in 1996, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama (BCRFA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help find a cure for breast cancer by funding promising breast cancer research in Alabama and raising community awareness and funding for that research. BCRFA funds promote a comprehensive approach to battling breast cancer by promoting collaborative and innovative research to help diagnose, treat, prevent, and eradicate the disease.
With community support, BCRFA has invested over $15 million in life-saving breast cancer research and treatments across Alabama since its founding in 1996. Most recently, in December 2023, we announced an annual investment of $1.25 million to our grantee partners, including the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Auburn University, CerFlux, the Mitchell Cancer Institute at the University of South Alabama, the University of Alabama, Tuskegee University, and HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology. All funding stays in Alabama, but the impact is worldwide.
